Department of Arabic of University College is one of the oldest centres of teaching Arabic in the state of Kerala. This department started functioning from 1942. By the commencement of B A degree course in Arabic Language & literature in 1968, this dept. became a full fledged one. In 1971, it was elevated to the PG dept. of Arabic under the University of Kerala. Further, the dept. was approved as a Ph.D Research centre in 1984. In 1994, M Phil course in Arabic was introduced as the only centre for M. Phil studies in Arabic at college level in the state. Since 2009, the dept. has been has been publishing a standard annual research journal in Arabic: Majalla al-Aasima with an Impact factor of 2.2 (in 2019), ISSN: 2277-9914 (Print version), eISSN: 2321-2756 (online version).
