The subject Statistics had been taught at under-graduate level for the disciplines of Mathematics and Physics, and at post-graduate level for the disciplines of Mathematics, Geology, Botany, Zoology and Economics in the University College, Trivandrum till 1990. There were three teachers of Statistics handling these classes, who were under the Department of Mathematics. Dr. U.S. Nair, a world renowned Statistician, was a faculty during 1924-`36 and 1938-`45. He was instrumental in starting the Post-graduate Department of Statistics in 1945 in the then Travancore University, which is the second full fledged Post-graduate Department in Statistics in Indian universities. It was on 29-03-1990, the Department of Statistics was established in the University College by bifurcating the Department of Mathematics. Till 1994-’95, the Department of Statistics was handling the subject Statistics for the above mentioned disciplines and also for Geography at under-graduate level. It was in the academic year 1995-’96, the Department of Statistics became a Post-graduate Department by starting M.Sc. Statistics Degree Course. Department of Statistics in the University College is the only department offering M.Sc. Statistics degree course in colleges affiliated to the University of Kerala.
